2019 CEA awards for electricity innovation
Recently, Manitoba Hydro picked up two awards at the Canadian Electricity Association’s (CEA) 2019 Centre of Excellence ceremony. These awards celebrate projects demonstrating innovation excellence and leading-edge technology in an electrical utility. The project Controlled Switching for Energizing Large Transformers addressed the challenge of energizing large transformers that contain residual magnetic fields.
Electric vehicles and the future of the grid
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is at an all-time high. As government emissions targets get more aggressive and auto manufacturers work to meet growing demand for electric vehicles, many industry professionals are forecasting increasing growth in EV adoption for both private and commercial use. We’re not sure exactly what the future will hold for the auto industry, but one thing’s certain: as EV adoption grows, so will demand for electricity.
Keeyask Generating Station building legacy of reliable, renewable energy
Another major construction season is underway at Keeyask Generating Station project, 725 kilometers (approximately 450 miles) north of Manitoba Hydro’s headquarters in downtown Winnipeg. Located on the Lower Nelson River, the 695-megawatt hydroelectric station is currently on track to meet its $8.7 billion budget, with the first generator expected to go into service in October 2020 — 10 months ahead of schedule.
Manitoba reservoirs are MISO’s rechargeable battery
When most people think of batteries, they think of the battery in their car or those classic copper tops. But luckily for us (and for our neighbors), Manitoba Hydro has some of the best batteries around: our hydro reservoirs. They can store energy for minutes, hours or days, making electricity available when needed.
