In November, Manitoba Hydro released its first Corporate Social Responsibility Report, detailing the utility’s contribution to communities that goes beyond supplying renewable hydroelectricity and clean-burning natural gas.

“Our mission is to create value for customers by meeting their expectations for the delivery of safe, reliable energy at a fair price,” Manitoba Hydro President and CEO Jay Grewal said. “We also play a large role in the day-to-day lives of our customers, the businesses they work in and the communities we all live in.

“The Corporate Social Responsibility Report is our way of measuring how well we’re fulfilling our mission and our greater responsibility to act in the best interests of all of our customers. It’s also a starting point to show us what we need to do to get better.”

Grewal said the 54-page Corporate Social Responsibility Report focuses on the utility’s efforts to reflect the values of Manitobans, such as protecting the environment, emphasizing diversity in hiring new employees, and strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities. The report is available on the Manitoba Hydro website.

“To us it’s more than the light coming on when you flick the switch,” Grewal said.

Grewal also said the report demonstrates the commitment of Manitoba Hydro employees across the province in making their communities safe, vibrant and inclusive places to live.

“Our organization is powered by dedicated, talented individuals who also contribute their time and energy after hours to a multitude of local volunteer interests and organizations,” she said.

“We are more than just a utility — we live here.”
